Traditional Métis Moss Bag
Métis Crossing is hosting a Traditional Métis Moss Bag Workshop on March 14–15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Métis Crossing, Smoky Lake County, Alberta. This two-day hands-on workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of the traditional Métis moss bag while creating their own handcrafted piece.
Guided by Métis Traditional Teachers and Knowledge Holders, attendees will learn the history and teachings behind moss bags—traditionally used to safely wrap and carry infants—while gaining practical sewing skills. All materials are provided, including fabric, ribbons, leather, lining, and thread. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine if they prefer, though hand sewing is also an option.
The workshop is open to participants ages 16 and older, with limited spaces available to ensure a personalized learning experience.
